Barack '08. 10-28-08 06:25pm EST
Okay.

I know that a few of you will want to skewer me for this, but before you do, I'd like you to know the reasons why I AM voting for Obama, and why I'm NOT voting for McCain.

(I think it's only fair, since I've seen nothing but McCain plugs all over Pleonast for the last, oohhhhh 3-4 months.)

First of all, I am ALL FOR the separation of Church and State. I understand that when the government decides to legislate something that we agree with, we all tend to rejoice. However, I'm not in agreement with this at ALL.

The legislation we had in place was based on Christian principles, true. But they are also based on the foundations of many other monotheistic religions. Our basic laws were laid for the protection of our basic rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. If someone tries to murder us, that's the right to life. If someone tries to steal our stuff, that affects us as well. If someone tries to force you to believe something that you obviously DON'T, that's encroaching on your basic rights as well.

Because of that, I don't think that the marriage of two people of the same sex should be against the law. Frankly, there's nothing in the Constitution that states otherwise. In fact, there's a little something that's called "the pursuit of happiness" in there. And if two *consenting* people want the rights to insurance, hospital visitation, and property disbursement that the rest of us are entitled to, I don't think we can honestly deny them that, which is actually something John McCain and I agree on.

Additionally, Obama wants to give us credits towards college, increase funding for early education, end the war in Iraq responsibly, and ensure that there are alternate forms of energy when the world's oil supply inevitably runs out."Drill, Baby, Drill!" will appease the masses, and people want to HEAR that it will fix our rising oil costs, even though folks like Ron Paul say that due to refinery costs, it won't help a single PENNY to do so.

For the record, here are some things that are absolutely, positively NOT TRUE about Barack Obama, even if you hear otherwise via television/email/friends & family:

1)He's a Muslim.

Folks, if you've followed this election since the primaries, Republicans were trying to get him in trouble for things his CHRISTIAN PASTOR was saying to begin with. I can understand potentially being upset by the things the pastor said, but c'mon. You can't have it both ways: either he's a Muslim, or he's a Christian.

2.) He's for Partial Birth Abortion.

False. Check up on it from any decent source,(factcheck.org) and you'll find that he was one of the politicians who put a MUCH BETTER law in place to protect infants born of Partial Birth Abortion. This is why he voted AGAINST an addendum to this law that was already in place: it didn't provide as well for the baby after it was born.

3.)He's going to introduce so much new spending that none of us will be able to afford our current lifestyle.

Again, check the source. The spending he wants to begin will be taken care of by eliminating tax cuts for Fortune 500 companies, by eliminating many programs that are obsolete for our current times, and begin new ones that will promote growth for our country.

4.) His Health Care plan is going to lead us to be like Canada and Australia, where their doctors are ill-equipped for difficult surgeries.

Again, untrue. All he wants to do is introduce a Health Care plan that's affordable for those who aren't offered health care from their employers. He's NOT going to be taxing the current health care system, which John McCain plans to do, and so those who have it can keep it. Those who need it can pay the government to get it. Excellent.

And finally.....

5.) He's a Socialist.

Okay. So. Let's say, for example, that as a community, we all live on separate sides of a river. We all need a bridge, because our employment is on one side of the river, and our homes and markets are on the other. Obviously, nobody WANTS to pay for this bridge. "Why should I have to pay for the bridge!? What if I want to swim across!?" we all ask. But ultimately, the bridge would provide convenience and a better way of life for the community. So everyone is asked to pay for this bridge.

As a community, this bridge costs money. If every person had to pay an even $1000 for this bridge, that sure would work. But say that there are people that have 12 kids, struggling to make it, and still desperately need this bridge. Don't you think it would be cruel to ask these people to pay $1000 for this bridge, when that would ruin them, instead of asking the people who make millions to pay the $1500 they wouldn't even notice being gone? As a Christian, I just think this is a no brainer, which is why I don't understand why so many Christians vote Republican all the time. Granted, in general, Republicans are against abortion and gay marriage.

But besides those issues, Why? There are people who live in shanties, who have NO money to their name, who are struggling to feed, clothe, and support their families in the crisis we're in, and we're the WEALTHIEST nation in the world! How can this be? Because we're selfish. We pout because we HAVE to give our money
to people less fortunate. He HAVE to let the government give our hard-earned money to people who don't have enough to eat, don't have enough clothes on their backs.

Granted, I understand that there ARE people who take advantage of this kindness. Don't you think they'll have to answer for it, whether it's today or it's in eternity? It's up to us to do the RIGHT thing.

I don't like Abortion. I hate it, in fact, like anyone with a heart does. But I don't think it's the SINGLE issue to vote on, especially since McCain wants to hand it over to the states instead of abolish it altogether.

I just think that we all need to consider which party we stand behind and why. John McCain hasn't attended a church or been affiliated with a church in over two decades. He also was Pro-Choice only four years ago when he ran, but realized that it wasn't going to win him the Republican vote, and changed his mind. I'm not for a flip-flopper who calls himself a "Maverick".

50 Aubrey-points to anyone that read the entirety of this post.

sweettExcellent. I have no idea who to vote for now. Perhaps a write in...
daytodayI did a little fact checking on "fact-check.org." At least two of the people associated with it worked on the John Kerry and/or Al Gore campaign. Just something I noticed.
evilchris@scbrewer ... When was McCain the Governor of *anything*?
scbrewerSorry, Senator and Representative, pretty much his whole history in AZ.
dwatkinsI agree with many things you've said. I did read the whole thing - it's a very articulate post, and enjoyable to read. Follow your heart. :) I love you, girl.
phat_manI agree with some of your points, and disagree with others, but I do not fault you for your position on the issues. I have a deep respect for many views and opinions that people have that are contrary to my own as long as they are based in reason and logic, and not in blind ideology.
rachellizI agree Aubs!! Love ya!
scbrewerDarren, the christian view towards welfare is wrong, but the worlds view of Christians giving is also wrong. We are commanded to give individually, our time, our money and our efforts. I have several people who are close to me who are on WIC and both of them work and they are trying their best to work their way off of government support and I do not fault them, especially since they are trying their hardest and working. I also believe that if we are going to be pro life that there needs to be some sort of set up to help mothers who decide to keep and raise their children, but I can't help but wonder if that isn't our personal responsibility and not something that is government run. I'm looking down the barrell at my grandmothers health care and my dad's social security money in 5 years, it won't be there because it is government run because the government needs to be out of all of the above.
I believe it is up to us as individuals to help and do not believe it is the governments responsibility. Should we be giving more? Absolutely. We should be looking for opportunities. We get in our shells, in our bubbles, eat our massive amounts of food when we have thousands of children just in the western kentucky area in the foster system, homeless shelters, a battered womens shelter, and an international refugee center in Bowling Green alone. Not to mention the countless retirement homes and the health center in downtown BG. We can help and we shouldn't be reliant on the government to do so. Keeping their hands out of my wallet means that I get a say who is helped, because among those who do truly need it, there are many who do not.
cali_dudeeh, to each his own ya?
lindseydThank you for explaining your reasoning, and Dustin is right, we each can make our own choices. Obama or McCain, each person can choose. One of my concerns is simply one of your viewpoints: "I don't think that the marriage of two people of the same sex should be against the law. Frankly, there's nothing in the Constitution that states otherwise." That MAY be true, but I am worried that we as christians sometimes forget that it is not only about obeying the laws of the land, but being governed by God's law. Even if homosexual marriage were legal, it is still a sin against our Father. And if it is a sin, how can we hold the view that there is nothing wrong with it?
lindseydI hope I'm not reading too far into things, and I'm sorry if I am. I am glad you have spent the time to be well informed and seek out a thoughtful choice. I would just caution us all to always remember Acts 5:29 when holding a viewpoint. Thanks for reading my rambling!:o)
saraI am just a 'pleo-lurker' you know what I'm talking about, I clicked on your name from a blog of a blog of a blog of a friend of mine ;) Anyway. I just wanted to respond to her comment about homosexual marriages. We also have to remember as Christians, we are to judge those INSIDE the church, not outside. I think we sometimes get caught up in the self-righteous judgment hype (take the westboro baptist radicals for example) and start to inform people that they are going to hell and why. It's not our place to do that at all IMHO. We are supposed to keep our flock in a right heart but it is not our place to determine the destination of other souls.

I cannot honestly tell a non-Christian that it's wrong for them to be in a homosexual marriage because it's wrong for them not to be a Christian. (All sin is equal when their souls are concerned.) They need to respect God before we can expect them to respect God's law. I have many reasons for voting the way that I'm planning on voting and it's not for Obama. I do wish we had two qualified candidates running so no one would feel like their vote was wasted instead of everyone feeling like that. I don't want to hi-jack the post, but homosexual marriage is an issue I've studied many hours on, so I thought I'd throw my thoughts out there. If anyone wishes to respond to my comment please bring it to my blog to ensure I'll read it :)
bryanharwellI guess I got 50 Aubrey points. Uh, um, whatever that means. Nice thoughts.
mrswestphalthank you! (: wow you have a lot of responses to your last blog ha
hamm0ndeggsYes, we're going. Unless you don't want to go.
justcallmejoeI didn't read the comments above, so sorry if someone already pointed this out, but you're confusing Obama's opposition to the born-alive infants protection act with his support of partial-birth abortion. Obama does support the court-enforced protection of the unlimited abortion license, up to and including partial-birth abortion. He has explicitly stated that support and it's easy to find from a variety of sources (including quotes from the primary debates). He received a 100% voting rating from NARAL for each of his terms in the senate.

As far as what I think you meant to refer to, the born-alive infants protection act, Obama has given various reasons for his opposition to the bill. You've obviously heard the Obama campaign's most recent official explanation; you can go here to see a variety of other (sourced) explanations he's given, including that babies who survive abortions are not protected by the constitution, and the bill would thus not survive a constitutional challenge.
justcallmejoeI could've phrased the first sentence more clearly: you're confusing Obama's opposition to the "born-alive infants protection act" (which obama killed in Illinois state senate committee) with his opposition to the federal ban on partial-birth abortion (which passed over his objections, and was held constitutional by SCOTUS).
abjbYou might want to research Obama's record on abortion a little better. He voted, as an Illinois State Senator, against the Infant Born Alive Protection Act... more than once. He also has said that he is for the Freedom of Choice Act, which, from what I understand, will repeal Bush's ban on partial birth abortion. It would also remove all of the other few remaining obstacles to abortion.
abjbLink
mregood thoughts. Im glad you researched who you voted for. Im proud of you for that. I know quite a few who just voted without thought. you must follow your heart and vote how you want to. its your vote. :)

Whew.

Things aren't much better around here, unfortunately. Still very sick. Taking steroids for the extreme swelling, antibiotics for any other potential infection I may have.... And most likely, I have an additional strep infection.

So so SO tired of being sick at this point. Please pray for us. My besty is coming up to take care of us on Saturday, and I know both Colin and I are looking forward to that very very much. She's such a blessing.

Thanks for your continued prayers. We're heading to the hospital tonight.
TheMrsCrabtreeWell I'm glad you went and I just can't wait to be down there to help you! Got any requests?

Still Sick. 09-03-08 01:51am EST
Sigh.

Went to the doctor again today, since my fever didn't stop even after I finished my antibiotics. Still having fevers around 101-102 degrees, so my doc was a bit concerned.

She put me on a HUMONGOUS dose of Amoxicillin, which was the highest they offered at the Walmart pharmacy. Kind of cracked me up. She said if I'm still having fevers by Friday, I'll be going in for extensive blood work, which scares me, but ya know. Anything that helps.

If you could continue to keep Colin in your prayers, I'd appreciate it. I went down for a nap, and I woke up to find everything in the apartment spotless. He's working so hard, and I feel so useless, and unable to perform my wifely duties. But he never makes me feel bad, and never plays the martyr. He just does it because it needs to be done, and never complains. Love him.

Also, prayers for rest would be greatly appreciated as well. I have such a hard time sleeping through the night, because fevers wake me up and make me all loopy. And when I sleep during the day, I end up with a fever as well. Sleeping apparently gives me automatic fevers, even after I wait to take my temp for 45 minutes after I wake up. Darn it!

Just thought I'd update.
desiI'm so sorry that you are still sick. I hope an answer is found soon!
mrswestphalim sorry you're having to deal with all of this! i'll pray for both of you!
metzgermomBe sure to stay well hydrated! Sometimes that helps with fevers too. And if ya' like yogurt, you'd better be eating some with such a big dose of antibiotic.
TheMrsCrabtreeI love you so much and I wish I could be down there to take care of you too! But I know colin's doing a great job...glad I found him for you :)
