We had a nice time in Abilene visiting with family and friends for Thanksgiving. I probably watched more football than what I'm accustomed to since some of the men in the Family are football fanatics!
I was asked the question, "Would anyone like to go out on Friday to take advantage of some of the sales?" My reply was pretty much this, " I would rather pull my teeth out than deal with the crowds." I just do not enjoy large crowds and crowded parking lots that contain anxious and frustrated shoppers. No THANK YOU.
We decided to come home on Saturday and had to drive through Dallas, Fort Worth on I-20. I could not believe the long lines of cars exiting off the highway onto the feeder roads where Malls and stores were present. UGGGGHHHH! It looked like CHAOS!! NO Thanks. We'll keep driving back to my small little town where all I have to be stressed about is the parking at Wal-Mart.
I guess I've become too much of a country girl. I have been spoiled by the slower pace of life, where once I was an aggressive freeway driver just trying to survive in the Dallas Rush Hour. Not anymore. Now when we travel into Dallas, I feel the tension building in my neck with cars zipping in and out of traffic.
AND that is why I have done ALL of my Christmas shopping ONLINE. Yeah, I have to pay a little for the shipping, but I would pay that in Gas $. Plus, I do not have to get Clara in and out of a carseat and drag her around from store to store. So much better. This may be the route I take every year.
I DO love this time of year though. I love driving to church in the evenings and hearing Clara in the back saying "OOOOOOHHH, WOWWWWWWW!!!" as we drive by homes strung up with Christmas lights. I love a blazing Fire in the fireplace, beautiful christmas trees and oh...how I love Christmas music. Especially, the classics with Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis, The Carpenters, Jimmy Durante. And who can resist stopping and sitting down to watch the old classic claymation Rudolph and Frosty television shows?
Really, when it comes down to it, Christmas was or has never been about the Shopping or the Material Gifts. But, it has always been about the traditions that your family put into place and put emphasis on. I have some wonderful, warm, memories of Christmas with my entire family. The music, the games that we played, the great food, and recognizing the Blessings that God has given us as a Family, as Christians, and as a Country.
