"Its hard to teach an old dog new tricks" 01-05-09 08:20am EST
It's funny how even mishaps fall into the best spot sometimes. See here.

School starts tomorrow.

Yesterday, we had a very funny moment in which Adam, Alyssa, and I (stuffed together in the back seat of a little car with some luggage on our laps) took turns talking on the phone to Charlotte and telling her our passwords in front of everyone. I must say, there was much giggling when everyone heard them. Charlotte was very careful to burn the paper and dispose of it in three spots however in the unlikely event that Adam has a very good memory and can carry out his threat to write nasty emails to out teachers daring them to fail us I find it appropriate to consider changing my password. Oh great, another password to remember.:/

It also didn't help that they overheard about some of my obsessive compulsiveness when I was on the phone. Oh, such informtaion to hide! (even if I am trying to do better)

Yesterday I started to really wonder about the fact that, though in many ways I'm able to miss the obvious, I do tend to observe the strangest and smallest things. They are so subtle and yet they just pop out at me. Romantically, I should consider using this skill and become a brilliant detective like amazing Sherlock Holmes! Or, more realistically, like poor Obsessive Compulsive Monk. Hehe. Although he's a bit extreme, alot of things he does makes perfect sense to me.(although I try to work on it since I can't get away with it so well.) Ouch.

I recently learned this game called Tripoly which is a poker/hearts/rummy game that is soooo much fun. I decided to buy chips and make my own board and somehow I came to the conclusion that purple and orange were the right combination. It's very odd but very very nice. I guess al around I'm becoming more broad with selection. I was just commenting to Alyssa the other day that it's funny how taste buds change as you get older. Apparently colors change too, buildings look smaller, and states shrink...at least, road trips take alot less time, seemingly. And I suppose that answers the question burning in you all as to why adults don't ask "Are we there yet?"!

Uhm, scripture for today...Job 38. Great chapter. While the book of Job definitely has to do with suffering, it serms to have just as much about Gods greatness and where we stand in relation to Him. And we must remember that. It will help increase our respect for God which helps our whole attitude.:)

I dreamed there was this plant that grew really tall. It looked like squash and pickles and it was called a Sickle tree??

"Thats all folks!" :)
PS-Haha, I unintentionally put my orange and purple paragraphs beside each other. :P But I still think they're fairly ugly together so there's no fear of my wearing orange and purple out.
emerI have noticed that you do tend to pick out the smallest things to scrutinize - like the cracked bricks on the ceiling behing the pulpit at church. Hope ya'll get down here safely.
kattathhey you... i miss you!
runaweasgood I'm glad you had a good (and safe) trip! :)
schmidtkinsHow did it happen that you were forced to give out such personal information? You are right about the changes as we get older. As for JOB, you are right to point out that it has as much to do with GOD as it does Job's problems. Isn't that the whole point of our sufferings? It tests our ability to trust in the stength and wisdom of God, even in the face of losing all that we most desire. By standing the test, we prove the goodness of God! He is worth it all!
sirtorinHehehe. Fun times. =)
sirtarinThis was a rather interesting post. =)

New Year- Do you care? 12-31-08 04:55pm EST
Tomorrow starts a FRESH new year with NO mistakes in it. Each day is another opportunity...to change, do better, right wrongs, and USE our precious gift of time. Our next decisions and goals and actions still lie before us. The option is still there, as it always is, to do the right thing, have the right heart, and act the proper way. Our true happiness is in our hands. It doesn't depend on what president we have, what country we live in, how much money and stuff we have, or who our family, friends, and suitors are. It all rests in our relationship with God. Life and happiness is what we make of our situations. Constantly choose the path that LEADS to righteousness and godliness instead of trying to double dip in God and the world. A mindset of purity as Christ had and a pure disgust of the world and how truly unpleasing and unfulfiling it is. Working on these things starts the chain reaction to helping solve and overcome all the rest of our weaknesses and flaws. My daddy is right. It IS all about relationships. With God and man. :)
1)Study
2)Pray
3)Seek righteousness in mind and action
4)Truly love and help your brethren

This I charge to you and task myself with.
:)

gobbler_boyMy goal this year is to over come my fingernail-chewing habit. :p

First: Remember to prioritize prayer! Also... 12-29-08 10:50am EST
There's so much to say but not really anything to say.
PA visit is like my dream world in almost all aspects!
Today, Meghan is giving the girls a history lesson and we are having a girls ball and dancing Jane Austen style dances in costume.
Enough said.

snoopy1. Got your package!
2. Dancing is going to be uber fun!
3. FYI: The girls are going to be at the house tonight with the boys and I -- Mom and Dad are going out to eat with his carpooler and her husband so it is going to be just us with a cass. from mom
_sylviaanne_NEAT.

I'm actually writing this from a computer instead of my phone....and it looks and feels very odd.

Sometimes I think I know too many people.

I'm getting to spend time with alot of old friends and new friends and if I wasn't so tired and lazy at the moment I'd link them all. Basically, the Beisekers, Hardmans, Bishops, Smelsers, Luthers, Romanics, and a few other families/peoples.

My dear cousin is coming up, sadly the same day I leave. No fair.

Yesterday, I made my spring banquet dress which was fun and turned out nicely. He seemed so surprised that i had completed it in one day that he gave me an insult/compliment by declaring that I'm "one of those extreme homeschoolers." I guess it was okay since it came from a homeschooler;)

I fit into this group of people very, very nicely. Methinks it would be a highly delightful place to move after college. We shall have to see about that...

Oh, and Alyssa and I are having lots of fun. =)

He got to go visit my family. I'm so jealous for him and my family. Not sure which I'm more jealous of. (although I'm really glad I wasn't stuck having to play Settlers all weekend. I dislike that game very much.)

Watched the last three eposides of the John Adams movie. So depressing.

I get to meet their baby! So exciting.

"Change is what you make of it."

Okay, enough silliness:
Last year, someone in Arizona preached a lesson on the fact that although we often (usually unrealizingly) use the phrase: "The Lord is on our side" it is a total misconception of the real state of things. We need to realize that it is not God doing everything for our benefit and us conveniently following along. Rather, everything revolves around God and we need to be doing His wishes and abiding by His laws and in a sense being on "His" side. Not only out of convenience but out of a heart of true desire. God is not made for man but man for God. Our purpose in life is to follow and serve God and to bring others to know Him so that they can do the same thing. The next time you go to think that God is doing something for "your side" remember that while God does bless us and do wonderful things everything is for His glory and we need to have Him as the focus and not us.

Also...
Take comfort in this....
We can all still be united, even with differences, and we can appreciate each other for the good things and copy them, take the bad things as a warning and avoid them, and ultimately we are all judged individually and not congregationally or with any other person. =)

"That's all folks!"
(1 older comment)
memento_moriInteresting last paragraph. I agree with the general principle, but I can't say I agree with the premise: that saying "The Lord is our side" is a misconception of the way things are. I believe that "The Lord is on our side" is a paraphrase of Romans 8:31 -- "If God is for us, who can be against us?" In that verse it *also* states things in the same manner as the phrase "The Lord is on our side." Romans 8:31 states it as a question, but it's a rhetorical question, and he's just finished talking about all things working together for the good of those that love the Lord.

I definitely agree that the focus needs to be on the Lord, but I don't agree that the phrase "The Lord is on our side" is a misconception. If we are with God, God is in fact on our side. I guess I don't view the "Lord is on our side" as a "he's doing everything for my benefit," but in battle terms: we're fighting a battle and if I am a true Christian, as I claim, the Lord IS on my side.

And also, consider Psalm 124:
“If it had not been the LORD who was on our side,”
Let Israel now say—
2 “If it had not been the LORD who was on our side,
When men rose up against us,
3 Then they would have swallowed us alive,
When their wrath was kindled against us;
4 Then the waters would have overwhelmed us,
The stream would have gone over our soul;
5 Then the swollen waters
Would have gone over our soul.”

AS I said, I *do* agree with what was meant, and that we need to be careful not to get egotistical about the whole thing, but I think there are many instances where scripture uses the same type of wording. Another one I know of is Psalm 118:6 (which the Hebrew writer quotes in chapter 13): "The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?"

Okay, I've rambled far too long now. :)
memento_mori(meh, I hate it when I take for.ev.er writing a long comment, and in the time it took me to write it, someone else has already said the same thing I did, just in fewer words.

And that's not ALL of psalm 124, btw. Just the first little-more-than-half.)
memento_mori and now you have a lot of red on your blog, and I just remembered you really don't like that color. Ooops...
thesecondthoughtIt's ok, Rebecca. We'll keep you, anyway.
thesecondthoughtHi, Britt!
thesecondthoughtI suppose their is enough blame to go around to make both of us guilty for that... Remind me again when you said you were going to come up and see me?
sirtarinAt least you explained my sentiment better, and thought of scriptures to support it, which I did not. So, overall, I think yours was better. Especially since you generally have a more eloquent writing style. =)
thesecondthoughtI just sent you an email.
memento_moriUmmm... thanks? I guess? Now I fell like a... a dog or a cat or some sort of pet! ;-)
hoosierbybirthI'm glad you are having such a wonderful break from school. I understand what you are saying in your next to last paragraph. and agree with your premise. When we are living and doing as we should as a Christian, the Lord is on our side.
snoopyI'm so glad you are at our house! It has been a lot of fun!

I can't wait for tonight at Longwood!!
ominieI miss you, too! And I looove you! And today is supposed to be our spiritual talk day :(
ominie(lol, because you know you can only talk about spiritual things on Thursdays!)
emerIt's good to hear from you. It sounds like you're having a blast up there in the cold weather.
sirtarinLet's hope it was like a cat. They supposedly always land on their feet, so there would probably be a lower likelihood of injury that way. ;D
trefe_somethinghehe, I'm glad you like it! It was a hand me down from my sister, and I'm not sure where she got it from...lol
obi_wan_kenobiYay for randomness (you extreme homeschooler, you)! :P
sirtorinFun post. =)
cyber_space_cadetAwww, cool, you got to go to Longwood?! VERY, VERY, VERY cool place, especially at Christmas time.

I'm just a little bit jealous. ;-) I miss home this time of year more than any other, because my family is ALL together having a BLAST, and we are far away.
_sylviaanne_Too many friends? Finally you see. But you can never have too many friends.
_sylviaanne_By the way, we only played settlers ONCE!
brownieI am glad you are having a wonderful time! have fun in the snow and Merry Christmas!
tweedledeeSo are you going to come see us tomorrow night??!!!! I haven't told my familia that you are in the same state yet... should I keep it a surprise or just tell them? ♥
runaweasgood Actually it can be plurel. We don't normally use it like that, but in a quote like this it actually enhances the point. Question, would you say: "there is a bowl of fruit" or "there is a bowl of fruits"?
jaydonI bought your most favorite game today! Can you guess!

I am in North Carolina heading up to Pennsylvania for my break. (so if any Rhode Islanders want to come over and visit...)
Semsester #1: Very good.
Lots of things to improve for next semester. Very excited for it.
Wonderful, spiritually minded friends. They are AMaZING and have been so helpful.
Muchly blessed by God.:)

emerI'm glad you enjoyed your semseter, and I look foward to another great one just around the corner.
obi_wan_kenobiHave fun in PA (Watch out for Adam!)!
sirtarinSpiffy! Have a fun break! =)
hoosierbybirthGlad your semester went well. Have a great break!
sirtorinEnjoy your break! =)
purdy_2010That would be fun. I doubt I'll make it down there this year though, maybe some other time? Are you going to FC for a second year?

What part of NC were you in?
tweedledeeAre you in PA for the whole break???? Then we might see you!!! ...if you're near their place!! ♥
tweedledeeWe'll be at Libby and Jeff's (Smelsers) but I sort of don't think that they will worship with the others... it'll be Wed. the 24th. Maybe we can plan something after... ask Adam about how close the two families are to each other. This would soooooo splendidly wonderful!!
tweedledeeHmmmmm... so are you going to convince someone to drive you over since I doubt my parents will drive that just for you =P
thesecondthoughtAnother four hours of driving would get you in my neck of the woods... But I don't spose you would want to do that, would you? *Sniff* I guess that's the price I pay, living in one of the most beautiful places on earth... (Hint, hint!)
thesecondthoughtOk, foget the hint. Come up and see me!
lori_in_paHi, B -- welcome!
jaydonI want too visit you!!!! I still think you need to take a ride here, your much younger. Just grab a bunch of people, stay here, and I promise you a homecooked meal and a trip to Boston! Remember the time we went New Year's eve and saw all the sculptures. Wait.... come to the New Year's eve party....:)
_sylviaanne_Luke is here. he grew a beard, and mustache.
_sylviaanne_You set such a good example sis
_sylviaanne_that is why i love you.
enyekHmmmmmmmmm.... a road trip sounds like fun!! i would if I could...
purdy_2010Oh wow! She lives like an 1 1/2 from me. That's crazy! LoL
brownieIt was so good meeting you. Actually, it was like a long lost friend being united, even though I had never met you before. I hope you have a wonderful break with Alyssa! which, I am sure you will.
7laughinghardmansThanks for your help today with the eggs and lunches. You're wonderful!
family_manYour PA is glad you're safely in PA, but ALso wishes you could be with us in AL, but overFLowing with anticipation of seeing you in FL.
