NYC...Here I come...I hope!

I am trying to plan a trip to NYC over my spring break. I've never been to the Big Apple and I've wanted to go for several years now. Does anyone have any tips, pointers, etc. for me as I'm planning this expedition? Keep in mind, I am a teacher...i.e., for those of you who are reading this at midnight, I'M POOR! haha! Hopefully I can find some cheap way of getting there...and a cheap (but CLEAN) place to stay while I'm there! :)
Things to do:
Broadway show (definitely number one on the list!)
Statue of Liberty
Empire State Building
FAO Schwartz
lots and lots and lots of pictures!!!
What else should I do while I'm there?

appleI would want to try some REAL NY style pizza!
cristaok i went to NYC during spring break a couple of years ago. THE absolute place you MUST go for AMAZING pizza is called Lombardi's. IT IS AMAZING! Its located in Little Italy (spring street to be exact, im retty sure might want to double check the street name) but its famous! its on the travel channel and so good! the wait is so long! so make reservations! try greys papaya (its a hotdog) those are really good too!(and cheap) any vender selling hotdogs are amazing as well! oh if you like art go to the MET! THEY ARE CLOSED ON MONDAYS!!! we went on a monday and were soooo dissappointed. There are so many more things to do! Empire state is a MUST! (go at night becuase you can look over the city its gorgeous!!) Any more questions just ask!
maryelI would go to the World Trade Center site.
zanneOh and I was going to say the World Trade Center site too! And I think I would want to go to NYC Macy's. That would have to be huge!! ;-0 Oh, and Central Park definitely!! Now I want to go!! :-( I can't get Luke interested in going there!
chefybabyI dont know where you heard that! That happened to Jason and I ages ago. Well about 8 years ago. It was right after we were married. After that we moved from Plant City to Brandon. And I loved living over there in our apartment!
chefybabyWhat kid of camera did you end up buying?
babyelephantFun! I hope you get to go. We hope to go someday too as a big family trip.
chefybabyhow cool! i know you'll love it. i love mine! now that its the new year, i plan to take all sorts of pictures! i wish i was crafty, then i would scrapbook too but since i have neither the time nor money, i'll add that to my things to do when i start working lol
waxtadpoleI told Suzanne about the 'no gifts' thing.
chefybabyoh and i asked lauren about that and she said they were talking about people that steal or robbers in class so that made her think of that. so that totally makes sense. i actually cant believe she remembers that because its not something we talk about. it was sooooo long ago. owell. just goes to show kids remember and say anything!
chefybabylol, yep thats true! and i'll be done by the first part of may so i cant complain. i did find out today with all the classes im taking this semester, i'll be able to graduate with an AS in nursing and an AA in liberal arts. i dont know what all that means in the big scheme of things other than ive taken ALOT of classes in the past 3 semesters he he.
po
speedyfingersI sooo love NYC. I stayed for a week, so I had enough time to everything. Personally, I think the tacky tourist double decker buses are a great deal. You can get on and off at the stops as you wish. It made for an easy way to get around and not get lost. I'll honestly say that the UN was one of my favorite places of NYC. I thought it would be really boring, but it was fascinating to see the hall and everything. Times Square, Empire, Central Park, Met, FAO, Tiffanys, those are musts for me. Be prepared to do a lot of walking. If there is one particular show you want to see, I'd order the tickets ahead of time. Otherwise, the TKTS booth is a good deal but you probably won't get the hit show that's out at the time. But take a chance. We saw Death of a Salesman with Brian Dennehy and Jekyll & Hyde and ended up loving them. Biggest advice, avoid Miss Saigon. We left during the second act. Didn't realize it was about prostitutes. :( We stayed in a hotel a few blocks from Times Square. It was around $150 a night. Not cheap, but it was close to everything. Good luck! I know you're going to have a great time.
waxtadpolethank you, friend. What is 46 supposed to feel like? I don't feel old.
laurar209Okay, so I've only spent one day in the city doing tourist-y type stuff so take the following with a large grain of salt but here are my ideas:
DEFINITELY the WTC site -- there's construction going on, but a couple of buildings with exhibitions. Bring tissues and prepare to remember a day 8 years ago.
Empire State Building -- expensive (20$ or so) but SO cool. You can pay extra to go another 5 stories up, but don't bother... the cheaper/lower level is amazing!
If you like history, then definitely aim to go to Ellis Island... I've gone twice and it's so neat.
Statue of Liberty is neat and provides a really cool glimpse of NYC across the Hudson.\
laurar209AND COME SEE ME!!! Or at least tell me when you'll be in the city... I have weekends off and I'd love to hang out with doing whatever if you have time. :)
laurar209When a group of Gburg ppl went, we stayed in Jersey City (across the river) and got reasonable rates at our hotel... I don't remember the name of the place, but I'll check. And the Manhatten church meets on Tuesday night, not Wednesday (so unscriptural... ;).
laurar209If you're willing to drive some to get into the city, there are brethren in NJ who would be able to put you up... I can get you some names. :)
laurar209Oh, and bring sneakers. Seriously. Unless you want to die a thousand deaths by your second day. 'Cause you will WALK. A lot.
waxtadpole Oh my word, your profile pic is totally creepy. Take it down immediately! I won't visit your page if you keep that up there.
waxtadpole

Creeeeepppppyyyyy
zanneLOVE the new pic!!!! See. I'm the cool one! Ha,ha!
zanneAnd what is up with you two?? ;-0
appleI did have to pick my self up off the floor! Ha ha ha! J/k
I am SO proud of you! I'm sure it came out great.
Let me know :)
waxtadpoleyou know, considering the innumerable meals I've invited you to partake of at my house, you'd think at least ONE stuffed shell might have my name on it.

Some interesting questions 12-30-08 11:50pm EST
Today I was hanging out with some friends (non-Christians) and they asked me some pretty deep questions. OK, so after reading this you may think I'm a huge loser...but they struck me as "deep". The first question was, "In your religion, do you think that the Bible is God's word?" I was like DUH of course it is...well I really didn't say it like that but explained that yes I do believe that it is a book written by men who were inspired by God.
Then she asked, "So do you also believe that you have to do everything the Bible says, and that if you don't, you're sinning?" At this point, I got a little nervous. I always get nervous in these situations because I am so scared I'll say the wrong thing....or that I won't be able to explain everything the right way. So I said, "Yes, I do believe that if you're not following what the Bible teaches, you are sinning." Then I explained that no one is perfect and while all Christians should be striving to do everything that is commanded of us, it is a constant struggle to follow the Bible...but a struggle that I'm OK with having.
So, then my other friend asked, (and here's the kicker!) "Do you believe that everyone who is not the same religion as you is going to Hell?" WHOA! I hate this question. So, here's what I said. I told them that I think that anyone who is following the Bible will go to Heaven. (I don't think that was wrong) But I also told them that it is a very hard question to answer and that is why I am so glad that I'm not the judge. I told them that while I try to do what the Bible says, I am so thankful for God's grace, because I know that there is a TON of things I could be doing to be a better Christian.
Then we got to talking about all the different religions there are in the world. And I just said that the only reason for that is someone read the Bible and thought, "hey I don't agree with that...I'm gonna do something different." Anyhoo...I don't think that I converted anyone today...but I do hope that I at least got them thinking.
What would you have said?
anneAll of us have probably been asked all of those questions (although perhaps not in one setting) and felt just as apprehensive that we would not say the right thing in just the right way. If I were them and heard your response when you said, "hey I don't agree with that...I'm gonna do something different," I would want to be very careful to ensure I didn't approach the Bible with that attitude.

And when people ask you questions about your faith, rejoice. It means they can see it in your life.
chefybabyi tried to change my own wiper blades once and ended up just going to walmart. it was worth it to pay them. i go there for oil changes and all that too. they do a really good job. well i go to the one in zephyrhills but im sure they're all good.
chefybabyoh bron, we've all been there i think. ^^^ but i agree that if people see something in you and they ask about it, its a good thing. If you are ever unsure, I dont think there is anything wrong with saying, I'm not 100% sure how to answer that but I'll find out. And that way you can always be confident and look up scripture to back up what you believe and say.

The hardest questions for me to answer are my kids questions. After my grandfathers funeral yesterday I went and got my kids and took them to the gathering they had afterwards. My dads whole family is baptist and they were having this dinner in the fellowship hall and Blake just started saying stuff like why dont we have a kitchen at our church. So i answered his questions as best i could based on what the bible teaches a church should be and how it should be used. The whole day was full of those kind of questions which I dont mind. I'm glad he is questioning things he sees. I got out my bible quite a few times and read to him and just showed him, hey this is what it says, im not making it up. I was also sure to tell him that didnt make any of my family bad people, but that they didnt follow all of the bible's teachings and that we should pray for them everyday so that they can be in heaven with us.

I think you did a great job. Some people wouldnt even attempt to answer.
appleWe had almost the same conversation at our house last week with my friend Melinda and her husband. I was VERY glad Danny was there to answer the "deep" questions. I know we didn't convert anyone that day either , but the seed was planted. That is what we are to do and you did a good job! I think to feel more comfortable with the question we are asked we (me)need to study our Bible more because all the answers are there. These kind of conversations are good because they motivate us to study more and look up what we don't know the answers to.

I clicked on your link to your favorite YOUTUBE video and watched it. WOW!!!
I was crying like a baby! SO POWERFUL!
zanneI think you did well! I hate being put on the spot. I am not good at that. I can come up with all kinds of eloquent responses after teh fact. And tehn I get really mad at myself!! ;-0 Always remember to turn to the BIble for answers. Don't eb afraid to say you need to look something up if you're not sure. But the Bible does say we are to be ready to give a defense so we all need to be studying our Bibles more! Thanks for the reminder!! ;-0
waxtadpoleI always think about 1Pet 3:15, like Suz said. It is wonderful to live the kind of life that your friends are asking you questions about what you believe. You are certainly doing something right, when folks ask you about your beliefs. I agree with everyone: it is imperative that we are studied so that we can be ready with an answer. It may be the only time that soul is introduced to the truth.
cristai would have basically said the same thing. im like you because i also get very nervous when people ask me these questions not knowing if i can explain it throughly enough. the only question i would have answered differently is how other religions started (I'm currenting studying this in world history). People who start different religions dont alsways have the bible as a "founding father" per say. For example Daoism was started becuase of harmony and balance with the world, someone (i forgot the leader right now I'm drawing a blank) did not like the belief of confucianism and was opposed to it and so created a whole new religion based on peace and harmony of nature as well as non-government. So there are many ways other religions start now thinking of this I wouldnt expect other people who didnt take this course to know this. But thats just how I would have answered the question. But I think you did great with those tough questions! :)
ccmomI can't really add anything to what everybody else has said, except to tell you that I think you did a great job. The question about people in other religions is very hard. I believe I know what God's word says, but I certainly do not want to be the judge of anyone else's soul. That is for God to judge. I believe I would have answered the same way, FWIW.
ccmomI usually end up finding Maddie's fancier dresses at Costco. Usually at great prices too!
chefybabythe walmart in plant city is lame. they dont have an auto place!
lemurboy_4my answers would have been pratty close to yours. The only one I would ahve really elaborated on wold be the third one. Anytime someone asks me that question, I always tell ask them if they or I seem like someone who would be competent to pass judgement on the whole of humanity, from the beginning to the end. They, of course, agree that neither I nor they are anywhere near competent enough to do that. Then I say basically what you said, about following the bible and being thankful that i am not the judge. The final good thing to say is that something to take away is that God is a righteous judge, and whether or not we agree with what He says, or does, He is always right and in control.
maryelYou did a good job with your friends and the Word discussion. Even if you didn't convert anyone, you got to discuss your beliefs and the "whys" attached. That always seems to either make me stronger or gets me to studying more! Good job.
nanajammaYou never know what seeds may grow in the future. Good job!
laurar209Amen. My prayer in those situations is that I don't turn people off from the Bible, but DO say somethng that makes them think ,or as I heard preacher say, "put a pebble in their shoe that keeps them very aware that they need to check it out." Good job, dear. :)
gabberooieGoin Hunntin and get me some good etin
babyelephantGood job, Bronwyn! That's true. It isn't about what "religion" you are. It is about following the Bible. Of course, there are religious groups that do not follow it, so they would not be correct. However, somone might go to a church that is following the Bible, and have secret sin in their life, and not be correct either. I think you did a good job. Now, about the earrings. I got that pair from Cliptomania.com. They have a lot of cute ones, both clip-on and magnetic. I probably get most of my earrings at Claire's though. They have a lot of really cute clips, that aren't big and gaudy. I also found some cute little ones at simplywhispers.com. They are hypoallergenic, so that's nice.
babyelephantCan't wait to see you in February! We're comming to lectures!! Did you get your hair cut? It looks like it in your picture. It's really cute!
msbeehavenHey! Nice to hear from you. Things here are good. It would be great to see you.

My heart is spoken for... 12-22-08 08:00pm EST

I heard this new song on the radio yesterday morning on my way to church and I absolutely love it. It's by the group Mercy Me (you may remember they are the ones who sing the song, "I can only imagine"). Here are the lyrics. (It is the second song on my playlist up there!)

Take this world from me
I don't need it anymore
I am finally free
My heart is spoken for

Oh and I praise you
Oh and I worship you

(Chorus)
Covered by your love divine
Child of the risen Lord
To hear you say, "This one's mine"
My heart is spoken for

Now I have a peace
I've never known before
I find myself complete
My heart is spoken for
(chorus)

By the power of the cross
You've taken what was lost
And made it fully yours
And I have been redeemed
By you that spoke to me
Now I am spoken for
(chorus)
chefybabyoh bron, i love those. i needed that this morning! I have always loved mercy me.
waxtadpoleMiss ya!

bronwynisastarYEA! I finally figured out how to put a picture on there by myself. Whew...that's a lot of work!
bronwynisastar
appleGreat pictures Bronwyn!!
Love your sisters hair! Cute :)
waxtadpoleIs music designed solely for worship, or did God also intend music to be soothing and/or entertaining? The most famous musician in the Bible, King David, primarily used music for the purpose of worshipping God (Psalm 4:1; 6:1; 54:1; 55:1; 61:1; 67:1; 76:1). However, when King Saul was tormented by evil spirits, he would call on David to play the harp in order to soothe him (1 Samuel 16:14-23). The Israelites also used musical instruments to warn of danger (Nehemiah 4:20) and to surprise their enemies (Judges 7:16-22). In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul instructs Christians to encourage one another with music: “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs” (Ephesians 5:19). So, while the primary purpose of music does seem to be worship, the Bible definitely allows music to be used for other purposes.

At the same time, it is abundantly clear that much of secular music does not meet the standard of Philippians 4:8. Secular music often upholds immorality and violence while demeaning or belittling purity and integrity. If a song glorifies what opposes God, a Christian should not purposefully listen to it. However, there are many secular songs that have no mention of God, but still uphold godly values, such as honesty, purity, and integrity. If a love song promotes the sanctity of marriage and/or the purity of true love—but does not mention God or the Bible—such a song can still be listened to and enjoyed.

It is a fact that whatever a person allows to occupy his mind will sooner or later determine his speech and his actions. This is the premise behind Philippians 4:8 and Colossians 3:2,5: establishing wholesome thought patterns. Second Corinthians 10:5 says we should "take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ." These Scriptures give a pretty clear picture of the kind of music we should not listen to.

There is nothing inherently wrong with any particular style of music. It is the lyrics that determine whether a song is “acceptable” for a Christian to listen to. But if a style of secular music, whether in the music itself or in the lyrics, leads you to think about or get involved in something that does not glorify God, it should be avoided.

When I listen contemporary Christian music, my purpose is not to use it as a tool to worship God. I am utilizing it to lift my thoughts, to keep my mind and my heart in a wholesome place. I let Gabby and Drew listen to much of what you have on your playlist. They understand that it not used for worship. It is for us to listen to music that is wholesome and clean. I much, much prefer it to Jonas Brothers, Taylor Swift (Gabby has her CD and she always has to skip tracks that have inappropriate messages), Miley Cyrus, I could go on and on. As a single parent trying to encourage my children to make the right entertainment choices, I prefer them to listen to this.
ccmomThank you! It is down right hot here today! Have a wonderful Christmas tomorrow!
hindsight2020Great music -- another group I listen to is The ZOE Group (http://www.reverbnation.com/thezoegroup)

'Tis the Season 12-06-08 02:27pm EST

Hearing some of the songs on my playlist totally gets me in the mood for the holidays. Sometimes I get a little sad because I think about all the things that I want for Christmas...but then again, I want those things all year round. But I think it also a good time to reflect on the good things! :)

Even though I can't put them into a cute song, here are a few of my Favorite Things:
*the fact that my grandparents heard the gospel on the radio and became members of the Chester Church of Christ in Chester, WV and thereore, my mom became a Christian...and so did I!
*my sister and the awesome choices she's been making lately

ccmomHaHa! I asked him about it because I was confused too. He said that he said "You're the only duck on my pond." He heard this on Home Alone 2 I think. It's on the part where Kevin is watching the old movies. Ha Ha!
waxtadpolei was thinking the exact same thing. i completely agree.
appleLydia LOVED her present! She opened it and said "My babies, this is just what I always wanted, Ms. Bronwyn is SOOOO SWEEET!!"
zanneSorry!! I don't do texts. They cost extra for me. And Luke just got a new plan from work and his cost too so we just ignore them. Call next time!! ;-0
waxtadpoleNo, I'm so sorry, Bron, Drew is soooo sick again. He is miserable, I'm miserable, no sleep, I'm just to the point with his asthma that I don't know what to do any more. I'm truly grateful that he hasn't been in the hospital this year, but it doesn't seem like he's doing better this year. It's an every week thing this year. I'm praying the warm weather this week will help him. Last night I got maybe 2 hours of sleep. I have my observation tomorrow morning and I am not prepared like I'd like to be. I wanted to stay at school for a little while today and get some stuff done for that, but he's so sick, I really need to just go on home asap, so that's what I'll do. I'm praying so hard that this is something he will grow out of soooon.
zanneI don't have a phone plan. It's pay as you go. It's cheaper that way!! ;-0
waxtadpoleDrew is in intensive care at LGH; please keep him in your prayers.
ccmomYou certainly do not! I had a wonderful time playing that game with the ladies. Thanks for suggesting it.
ccmomOh No! Praying!

cristayes maam. lol! :D
waxtadpoleI miss you. Post something really interesting.
waxtadpoleDrew and I won't be at church on Sunday. He is still on lots of strong meds and frankly, I'm really nervous to get him around a lot of folks right now. He's gonna be wearing a mask for a little while. We'll give Wednesday night a try, but we're gonna stay home Sunday. Sadly, I won't see you before the holiday, so Gabby will give you your special gift. I wish I could be there to see your face when you open it. Lots of love comes with that gift. Have a blessed time with your family. Give Cam a big sloppy kiss from Aunt Suzy.
appleHope you have a good Holiday and time off of work!:)
waxtadpoleYes, thank you very much. Everyone loved their gifts. Gabby is already trying to talk me out of the wallet. I'm sorry Gabby didn't remember to take yours to church Sunday. You'll get it when you get home. Have a great time!!
