power flicker 01-07-09 01:55am CST
anybody have experience in a house from the 50's having flickering lights when you run too much stuff in a room.

for instance, my room has a ceiling fan and a few outlets, i'm runing a laptop, lcd monitor, and speakers, and a phone and an alarm clock. when all are running the light flickers and i can hear it in the speakers.

loose connections?

just tighten them and put that goop on there ?? or what?

terradont get electricuted!
randallOur house does that a lot. I think it's because the circuits are overloaded and not wired properly. But I really don't know.
heidixEven my parent's house from the 70s..I can't plug in my hair dryer when other things are plugged in, like my phone charger. It blows a fuse..my dad already did some kind of fixing to it because it used to blow a fuse when I had the light on and my hair dryer.
randallI think outlets and lights are supposed to be on different circuits, so that when something is plugged in it doesn't drain from the lights, but most older houses are wired like that.
adelineghost ;)
viarostultegaI think Randall's on the right track there. Sounds like an overloaded circuit. It's now pretty standard to have the lights and the outlets on separate circuits too. I don't think that really started happening much until the 90s. Of course, Adeline's reponse also seems resonable.
caseymp3I've heard that aluminum wiring can expand and contract over time and work connections loose, and this contributes to the load problem.
larryAl also has a lot higher resistance values than copper. Could be the prob.
windham4lifeI don't know. I hope you can get it figured out!

moved, new semester, new bike light 01-05-09 03:07pm CST
lots of fun in the past week or so.

Adam and Ashley are one now...

my cousin Blake is engaged... I feel old.

I moved into my friends house just a little south of work and school, for cheaper than my old efficiency.

The little further distance includes really big dark hills, so I made a new headlight for my bike, and bought an 'emergency' style flasher for the back.

so a $5 china light plus some left over brackets...

So i got a free rear rack for my bike, and I found this bag *for $1.99* i'm going to make into a pannier with a bungee cord on the inside to hold it on. I'll get to that sometime next week, I need to seam rip some parts off that bag.

Fun times.

This semester will be interesting. Trying something different, some classes I've never taken before. All night classes too.

Hooked up my NES last night and had my friend Nick over and we tried to complete Mario 3, but we got too tired around 2 on world 5, so i'll have to use the game genie to continue where we left off.
larryCertificate... the FAA doesn't issue licenses. They are a good government branch... still.
bethoumyvisionworld 5! going from one little green island to an icey cold island = fun times!

The zero's are almost over, what will they be remembered for. The 0's seem right now to be lame.

Nothing significant, just a bunch of slow stuff that i can' identify.

Perhaps the complete collapse of good television will be remembered as the biggest thin in the 0's.
kerriganseptember 11 2001? the iraqi war? the election of the first black president?
yeah nothing significant this decade i guess...
caseymp3There will always be wars. And i think you mean the selection of the first half black president.
kerrigani do, but that's not how it's being publicized.
iamchriswindhamhow'd football go?
larryThe decade we declared a war that by definition was impossible... I guess we have done that in other decades though too, war on drugs... etc... oh well. Maybe on a positive side, we can say that the first decade in the 2000s people begain to wake up to the corruption in this country!
randallThe 90s were pretty lame too.
terrapeople didn't know how to dress in the 80's
meaganI know! Rebecca's pictures are always awesome! I thought she had a really good camera... now I have to know.
diannesI have pictures up from Adam's wedding. YOu are in some.

not bad for 4 dollars.
adampualwow, that is pretty cool! i need to knit a couple of those for wyoming.
terrai'm so proud!!!!!
iamchriswindhamsounds cool!
kalawiI went to that site and it has lots of cool ideas! :)
heidixhmmm, I should check that out! I was always shunned from knitting due to being cack-handed.
meaganSo you have a knitted square? What you're saying is you have a large pot holder? :)
caseymp3I don't knit correctly, definitely not the continental method, i just hold one stick between my knees and quickly transfer the loops on to the other stick using one hand to hold the yarn from the spool and the other to maneuver the other stick.
windham4lifehey that's pretty good!

Drink More Diet Soda, Gain More Weight? 12-18-08 02:15pm CST
Overweight Risk Soars 41% With Each Daily Can of Diet Soft Drink
By Daniel J. DeNoon
WebMD Health News
Reviewed by Charlotte E. Grayson Mathis, MD

June 13, 2005 -- People who drink diet soft drinks don't lose weight. In fact, they gain weight, a new study shows.

The findings come from eight years of data collected by Sharon P. Fowler, MPH, and colleagues at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. Fowler reported the data at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association in San Diego.

"What didn't surprise us was that total soft drink use was linked to overweight and obesity," Fowler tells WebMD. "What was surprising was when we looked at people only drinking diet soft drinks, their risk of obesity was even higher."

In fact, when the researchers took a closer look at their data, they found that nearly all the obesity risk from soft drinks came from diet sodas.

"There was a 41% increase in risk of being overweight for every can or bottle of diet soft drink a person consumes each day," Fowler says.
More Diet Drinks, More Weight Gain

Fowler's team looked at seven to eight years of data on 1,550 Mexican-American and non-Hispanic white Americans aged 25 to 64. Of the 622 study participants who were of normal weight at the beginning of the study, about a third became overweight or obese.

For regular soft-drink drinkers, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was:

* 26% for up to 1/2 can each day
* 30.4% for 1/2 to one can each day
* 32.8% for 1 to 2 cans each day
* 47.2% for more than 2 cans each day.

For diet soft-drink drinkers, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was:

* 36.5% for up to 1/2 can each day
* 37.5% for 1/2 to one can each day
* 54.5% for 1 to 2 cans each day
* 57.1% for more than 2 cans each day.

For each can of diet soft drink consumed each day, a person's risk of obesity went up 41%.
Diet Soda No Smoking Gun

Fowler is quick to note that a study of this kind does not prove that diet soda causes obesity. More likely, she says, it shows that something linked to diet soda drinking is also linked to obesity.

"One possible part of the explanation is that people who see they are beginning to gain weight may be more likely to switch from regular to diet soda," Fowler suggests. "But despite their switching, their weight may continue to grow for other reasons. So diet soft-drink use is a marker for overweight and obesity."

Why? Nutrition expert Leslie Bonci, MPH, RD, puts it in a nutshell.

"You have to look at what's on your plate, not just what's in your glass," Bonci tells WebMD.

People often mistake diet drinks for diets, says Bonci, director of sports nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and nutrition consultant to college and professional sports teams and to the Pittsburgh Ballet.

"A lot of people say, 'I am drinking a diet soft drink because that is better for me. But soft drinks by themselves are not the root of America's obesity problem," she says. "You can't go into a fast-food restaurant and say, 'Oh, it's OK because I had diet soda.' If you don't do anything else but switch to a diet soft drink, you are not going to lose weight."

The Mad Hatter Theory

"Take some more tea," the March Hare said to Alice, very earnestly.
"I've had nothing yet," Alice replied in an offended tone, "so I can't take more."
"You mean you can't take less," said the Hatter: "It's very easy to take more than nothing." Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

There is actually a way that diet drinks could contribute to weight gain, Fowler suggests.

She remembers being struck by the scene in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in which Alice is offended because she is offered tea but is given none -- even though she hadn't asked for tea in the first place. So she helps herself to tea and bread and butter.

That may be just what happens when we offer our bodies the sweet taste of diet drinks, but give them no calories. Fowler points to a recent study in which feeding artificial sweeteners to rat pups made them crave more calories than animals fed real sugar.

"If you offer your body something that tastes like a lot of calories, but it isn't there, your body is alerted to the possibility that there is something there and it will search for the calories promised but not delivered," Fowler says.

Perhaps, Bonci says, our bodies are smarter than we think.

"People think they can just fool the body. But maybe the body isn't fooled," she says. "If you are not giving your body those calories you promised it, maybe your body will retaliate by wanting more calories. Some soft drink studies do suggest that diet drinks stimulate appetite."
tom_bombadilOh. That explains a lot.
adampuali'd also bet that diet soda drinkers drink more liberally because they don't see it as harmful. of course, i remember a time when we consumed massive amounts of regular Dr Pepper :) glad we have changed our habits since then.
meaganI was shown a Nikon SLR, but passed because of the enormous size. In the future, though, I'd like something like that.
jeromehttp://englishrussia.com/?p=1949 thats funny
kerriganDiet sodas clearly are a cause of obesity because I have only lost 45 pounds since I switched to Diet Dr Pepper from regular.
caseymp3Is that ALL you have done?
kerrigannope. But perhaps that's why - like the study allows, I bet the diet soda drinkers in the study were trying to substitute that for other healthy lifestyle changes.

I can't always tell the difference between the caffeine free and regular (diet), but sometimes when I'm really craving the flavor of the drink, the caffeine free is just disappointing upon the first few sips.
beandiet food/drink is bad, bad, bad b/c it doesn't cure the REAL problem, which is an addiction. an addiction to sugar, or an addiction to fake sugar, either one is bad. the best bet is to stick to normal, healthy, straight from the earth foods and drinks. not saying i do it perfectly, but that's my goal!
bean(just my opinion, but seems to make the most sense to me)
windham4lifeI've heard that diet drinks are worse for you than regular for other reasons too (plus they taste worse in my opinion lol)...soft drinks are bad! I am becoming more addicted to coke...okay, not addicted. I might have like 1 or 2 a week, but still, it's like consuming pure sugar!
heidixYeah, I always hate to hear people justify eating more because they're cutting calories by drinking diet soda. It's all psychological.
cmvermont*sigh* i know it's bad. at least i drink regular soft drinks!
(haha it's the same logic that the diet drinkers used!)
