Coming Soon in July 2009... 01-07-09 06:27pm CST
Baby Becker!

Yes, Jeff and I are expecting a BABY in mid-July!!!

Thanks for all your prayers/concerns/good thoughts for us over the past few years with all of my health issues. We are feeling very blessed & excited!

Jeff graduates from law school in May and takes the Bar Exam only 10 days after my due date -- so we're already hoping the baby comes sooner rather than later! ;)

I've recently been experiencing the joys of morning sickness/general queasiness & I'm starting my 2nd trimester next week.

Hope this first week of 2009 is going well for everyone!

autumn leaves are falling down 11-12-08 09:50pm CST
I traveled to Nashville for a conference this past weekend. It was great to see the leaves actually change color!

I was able to enjoy a great cup of (Starbucks signature) hot chocolate and have it warm my hands as I walked outside in the crisp autumn weather.

oh yeah, & I got lots 'o FREE books -- score! :)

sheshefree books rock!!

dressing up 10-30-08 06:52pm CST
This week we performed "The Big Pumpkin" puppet show during
pre-school storytime(based on the children's book of the same name by Erica Silverman). We have 4 preschool storytimes at my library so needless to say I am a lil' tired :) It was great fun though-- I got to be the mummy and the bat (the bat's the best cuz he saves the day!). All the kids came in costume (the cutest was a little UPS guy and a cowgirl with her horse).

I dressed up like a "50's girl" & wore a poodle skirt -- one of my regulars (a little girl named Peyton) came up to me and said, "Ms. Deban, I like your sheep. Can I touch it?" hehehe

What are you or your kiddos dressing up like this year?
marlaI'll be in Denver from Nov 7-9, but maybe lunch on the 6th? I'll have to check my work calendar, but I *think* I'm free... :)
sperkyyay for storytime! i went to the library here in lake charles for storytime, and i thought of you. :)
gracie03What a fun job! I can imagine that must have been SUPER tiring! :)
kristasfaJohnny is a skunk... because he's my little stinker!
blueeyesRobbie is Curious George, and Kalli is a bumble bee! Our library is closed for renovations, and should be opening this week. I can not wait to head back to storytime!
haileymTylers going to be a monkey. We wished that we had the man in the yellow hat costume for matt so he could be George.
yosta UPS guy? How cute!!
ninaI thought of you when we were at storytime yesterday. Miss Bobby is good...but I think she lives in La La land. Tyler is going to be a cowboy this year.
larieHailey's going as Cinderella and Kate is going to be a pumpkin. I can't remember the last time I dressed up for Halloween!
larieOh and yes I loved all the books. I just thought the last one was a little anticlimatic at the end. i was ready for a big fight!
blueeyesYes, it is RR PL.
marla:( I actually have class that night...Oh well. Hope you have fun here!!
dcmoemeCharley was a cheerleader, the costume said EHS....Maddy was a vampire witch with dyed dark hair
ryanandnancyMe and Ryan were a 50s couple, Kaylee was a mermaid, and Coltong was a pirate! It was soooo cute! Wish we could have come for storytime. I think Kaylee is going to be big on reading too. Yeah! :)
loisI can't wait to see you next Sunday.
kristasfathanks Deban!
ninaThanks!

I've got to remember to update... 10-23-08 10:58am CST
In August, my mom and I were able to take a trip to Colorado Springs together. It was great! Since I was 8 years old, I have listened to the morals-based radio drama "Adventures in Odyssey" produced by Focus on the Family. It had been 20 years since it started & we attended the 20th anniversary birthday bash - which included meeting the actors and being a part of a live recording of one of the shows. It was an experience I will never forget. I am so blessed that I was able to share this experience with my mom-- I will always treasure our trip together.

In September, Jeff & I went to the Texas State Fair for the first time. It was fun to see the "sights & smells", but I don't think I'll ever have to go again -- haha! We did ride the Pharris Wheel, uh, I mean Ferris Wheel :)

This October has been uber-busy! Every October is national "Teen Read Week" for libraries, which makes my life as a "Teen Librarian" extremely eventful. We hosted 2 performances of our "Teen Mystery Night" play - teens watch the play, guess who the culprit is & try to solve the case. I acted in it again this year...and I was the killer! But it was an accident, Really!! We also hosted a teen band from Arlington whose lyrics are based on the "Twilight" series -- "The Bella Cullen Project". They were great!

In November, I'll be traveling a lot for work-related events... I'll be in Nashville one weekend & Austin the weekend after that... I hope I can see some of you soon!!!
sperky*gasp* APPLESAUCE!!!
kristasfawhoa... Bella Cullen Project is popular!
loisIt was so great to see you in CS. I'll let you know when we plan to come to Dallas for the exhibit.
larieSounds like you've been busy! Have you read the Twilight series? I loved it!
yblock57i was in nashville a few weeks ago :)
kristasfayea!!! actually, can you mail me TWO? My sister-in-law is a bigger fan than me! Krista Everett- 8850 Creek Willow Dr. - Tomball, TX 77375... Thanks Deban!
sunnytabWhat weekend will you be in Nashville?
marlaI was about to ditto Tab's question... :) AND do you have pictures with the AIO cast???? That's so awesome :)
sabrinaruckelWhen will you be in Austin!! You have to see my sweet baby!! :-)
ryanandnancySounds awesome! When can you come visit us in San Antonio? Ryan's 30th b-day is coming up in December! :)
sharonI just started reading those books.

I didn't even realized Adventures in Odyssey was still on. I remember listening to that as a kid, too. KSBJ I think?
ninaI hate that I missed when you came to CS:-(! Do your travel plans come this way anytime soon?
gracie03Sounds like a lot going on! Good to hear what is happening with you!

he has read of enchanted woods... 08-07-08 06:59pm CST
A children's book author read this C.S. Lewis quote at the library conference I attended:

"In a sense a child does not long for fairy land...Does anyone suppose that he really and prosaically longs for all the dangers and discomforts of a fairy tale?—really wants dragons in contemporary England? It is not so. It would be much truer to say that fairy land arouses a longing for he knows not what. It stirs and troubles him (to his life-long enrichment) with the dim sense of something beyond his reach and, far from dulling or emptying the actual world, gives it a new dimension of depth. He does not despise real woods because he has read of enchanted woods: the reading makes all real woods a little enchanted. This is a special kind of longing."

I love the thought that reading can make something ordinary become "enchanted".

Nearly every day at work I am asked by a child or a teen for a "fantasy" book...I read a study that said kids who read fantasy are usually well-adjusted, have a stable home-life, and are generally happy with life. Kids that read books that deal with real-life issues (realistic fiction) are generally troubled and trying to figure out how to fix their problems. In suburban Plano, life is pretty good for kids so maybe that is why they are reading fantasy... When I worked in East Austin, most of the kids wanted real-life books (if they read anything at all). It's only a study but it has me pondering...
blueeyesDid ya know that Phil and I have decided to homeschool our chickens. Is there anything you felt you missed out on by being homeschooled or anything you would have done different?
kristasfaso you've read it??? I loved it so much!
sabrinaruckelIf Dr. Suess is fantasy than I guess Clara is well-adjusted. My mom recently let me go through boxes and boxes of children's books she kept from the Daycare days. Now Clara has a nice selection and chooses mostly Dr. Seauss.
ninadid you get my message?
gingerspiceInteresting...I never was much of a fanasty reader...yet I consider my childhood home life to be pretty good. :) Recently I have discovered fantasy as a way to escape problems. Maybe I'm just the exception to the rule. I knew I was never normal any way. :)
windham4lifeThat's an interesting study. I had never heard that before! Are you working at a library?
sperkyi wish you worked at the gs library too! we would go every day.
ryanandnancyInteresting, and true I think. Fantasy has always been my favorite. By the way, have you seen that we are moving back to Texas? We'll be in San Antonio! Maybe we can get together later! And Ms. Librarian, I will need some book recommendations after we get there. Ryan is going to be working a lot away from home. :(
purpleroxgood thoughts.
how was your trip with your mom?
I miss you. I really need to talk to you soon.
yostHappy Birthday!
ryanandnancyhey deban! Ryan and I and the kids are in San Antonio now. We're still unpacking, but the end is in sight. :) I was wondering if you could offer any homeschooling advice, materials, etc. Ryan and I are thinking about homeschooling Kaylee beginning next year. Thanks! Hope all is well in Dallas! You're in Dallas right?
gracie03Hey, Deban! I'm not sure if you remember me, but I went to A&M at the same time you did (I was Valerie Hutson then). :) I go to church with Charlie, now! Good to "see" you on here!
