What's Old is New Again 01-05-09 12:57pm CST
So, most folks I know got some device over the holidays that allows for mobile internet access and/or other assorted handheld goodies: Macbooks, Iphones, Ipod touch, GPS devices, PSP, etc. All the while, I kept thinking: man I'd love to have mobile web on wifi at least, but there were reasons to pass on all options: Macbook (have a laptop already) ; Iphones (locked into cell contract til Sept.) ; Ipod touch (too expensive) ; GPS devices (got basic model for B-day); PSP (have a DS).

And then, this morning, Luke walks downstairs with a Dell Axim x50 handheld computer that my parents gave me a few years ago and I'd just stashed in a drawer. Luke said, "dad, can I have this?" I said, "surrrrrre.... wait a minute, let me see that." Sure enough, within 3 minutes I was checking the weather and screening emails via wifi. No, mac. nuts, I cannot enlarge or shrink text with the patented "index/thumb sweep." But it is still touch screen and was a nice find. What's old is new again.
maucknotI have an Axim X51v that I use from time to time -- a nice little tool.
preacherdavetxPoor Luke...
emersonk78Since Tony posted, I'll add the reason why I cannot afford an Ipod Touch: Tony brought this new Taylormade Burner driver to Texas and coaxed me to hit it. It was love at first strike and I bought one two days later.
preacherdavetxPoor Luke...
jenmurfflol - that's all I can think to say right now.
mamamiaMy kids spoiled me with two new "gadgets" over the holidays. For Christmas they gave me a badly needed external hard drive for the pictures that were using all my ancient desktop computer memory. AND THEN ... an early birthday present ... a Blackberry Storm! I was way past due for a new phone, and I get a 1/2-the-price discount with my EM employee discount. FUN!
adamandjessesdadI need a new handheld... my 5-year-old Palm is abuot to die. I might make the switch from Palm to Windows. I'd go Linux if I could find a good one.
platoPoor Luke...
i_wantobe_ready I have an Ipaq (Compaq) around here somewhere that I used to used a lot before IS gave me the Crackberry...
i_wantobe_readyPoor Luke...
terranice
tangsoodotpmPoor Luke...
jocSurely Luke gets something out of this deal!!! LOL
preacherdavetx^^^I think Luke got the lesson: Ask for forgiveness, not permission.
i_wantobe_ready^^^BWA HA HA HA!!

New Years Res. 01-02-09 01:31pm CST
(Spoiler Alert for Eastside Members)

Sunday night sermon will revolve around the faith of Daniel. There is something Daniel possessed in any and all situations that I am resolved to build stronger this year: BOLDNESS.

He stood up for the right to eat proper food as a teenager.
He prophesied hard truths to 2 powerful kings. And told one of them to stop sinning.
He worshipped God in that window, even after the edict was signed.

There are things that need to be said and done. How many times in '08 did God look down at me, waiting on me to say and do them? I am resolved to be bolder for Truth and tell people what God desires them to hear, confess Christ more readily, and be a light in this world that reflects more brightly the Light of the world.

Anybody else have spiritual resolves for this new year?
i_wantobe_readyBOLDNESS Yes, too many times I have "missed an opportunity" when I should have been more BOLD, maybe bringing to light some inaccuracy, or wrong thinking... Thank you for your BOLDNESS and may you have increase in that area this year.
I intend to work on my bible knowledge this year, I'd like to be stronger in that area.
carolattheriverMy goal for this year is to do more for others. I know of people that are sick or in need and I choose to let someone else do the helping. I need to be more bold, also.
maucknotYes, boldness needed. But don't be too bold with the new driver!!
greenmonkeys39to get my grandpa to come more (when he is not hurting to bad)
joyinthejourneyThey are doing well. My mom is enjoying her new home.

Which Person Are You? 12-28-08 08:45pm CST
3 kinds of people in this world:

1) Those who are glad when x-mas is over

2) Those who are sad when x-mas is over

3) Those who are mad about the question, since they really don't care.

Which one are you? (I'm going with #2)
travelagentwendiI think I am #2.
adamandjessesdad4) Don't have time to be concerned with it this year. Had fun, but gotta move on!
preacherdavetx5) All of the above depending on the day and time.
preacherdavetxWhat did you get?
carolattheriverI am ready for things to get back to normal. So I guess no. 1.
i_wantobe_readyDefinitely #2
girlietexan#2....my favorite time of year! My tree will be coming down this week :(
carolattheriverWe were all praising the lesson you brought this morning. Tonight was no different. You always do such a good job.
i_wantobe_readyDitto
jenmurff#1 It is all kinda silly to me.
kimhazelrigg#2 September to December is my favorite time of year
maucknot#1 I do enjoy the whole process; but when it's over, it's over...like a round of golf!!
mreid72Both #1 and #2.
rainoutsounds like he's bitter, next time go easier on him!
rainoutand i'm on the fence with your above question, a little of both
ALSO 2 really good lessons yesterday!
jenkegleyHmmm. . . somewhere between 1 and 2
preacherdavetxIf you work up Power Point on them send them over to me if you can. Thanks.
travelagentwendiDid you get my email yesterday?
lwDepends on the year...this year #1 (x-mas snuck up on me and I was very much unprepared)!
doxiemomI always enjoy this time of the year. I like being silly and wearing my reindeer antlers to school.
mamamia#2
afoxUsually I'm #2, but this year I'm #1.

4 Christmases 12-21-08 12:28pm CST
How many Christmases will you have this year?

4 for the Emersons:

Monday Night - Sommer's aunts and uncles and cousins on her mom's side at her grandpa's house.

Wednesday Morning - Our house, just the four of us.

Thursday Morning - Sommer's parent's house, with her mom and dad and 5 siblings. (Will stay Wed. night with them)

Thursday Night - My parent's house, with parents, two brothers and sis in law.

Can anyone beat that?

(competitive disclaimer: must be opening of multiple gifts to count as an x-mas.)
girlietexanMy first married one....thats all that matters :) Its a special one!!
girlietexanYours sounds fun though...give us a few years and it will be crazy like that!
mreid72Hmmm. Let's see:

Wednesday morning with Lisa's family.

Thursday morning with my family.

Either next Sunday night or next Monday morning with just the 5 of us (after we get back to Texas).

You got us beat. Just 3.
yoyomawe had five last year. it would be the same this year, but my dad's side isn't exchanging gifts.
preacherdavetxTied... Wednesday over the internet with family in Argentina. Thursday morning just the 4 of us. Thursday afternoon with in-laws and family and Thursday evening with additional family.
wberkWe consolidate.
gracie03We had Hutson Christmas yesterday, just the two of us either Wednesday night or Thursday morning, Effinger Christmas Thursday during the day, then Rowell (Mom's side) in Oklahoma on Saturday. Crazy! :)
kimhazelriggMAN! and I was thinking TWO was a lot to juggle :o)
rainoutuggghhhhh...i hope ya'll draw names!
jenmurff:P
emersonk78We only draw names for 1! So, too much buying. We're so popular with Discover Card that they invite us to their house for a personal Hannah Montanta show... and... we get in. (That one's for you: Rene, Jen and Jenny).
i_wantobe_readyYou are very welcome. I too was amazed. I thought you might enjoy what real coffee tastes like.
maucknotglad we cancelled on the golf today -- not so good weather. Friday should be better. Enjoy all of the gifts and time with family
preacherdavetxWould've loved to have video of you guys out golfing today! That would be great.
adamandjessesdadVirtual Christmas! I want to hook up a computer to the TV and a real video camera (instead of a dinky webcam) to do video chats. It'd be a lot more fun if everyone's faces were closer to life-sized.

Known Unknowns 12-19-08 08:43pm CST
Does anyone remember the speech by Donald Rumsfeld in 2002 concerning "intelligence" from Iraq? If not, you can youtube it under "rumsfeld known unknowns." If you have heard the 1 minute portion on knowns in Iraq, please help us clearly understand these three levels of information: (or just guess)

Known Knowns

Known Unknowns

Unknown Unknowns
emersonk78I feel like there's a sermon outline in all those knowns somewhere, but haven't been able to known it yet.
