Sad. 11-06-08 03:42pm CST
You know what... I don't like Oprah but I watch her show sometimes because it's the only thing on. I watched part of her show a few weeks ago about the prop that was trying to get and is now passed in California about making more of the livestock free range and making the cages for chickens bigger. Which sounds like a wonderful thing! They should be in bigger cages so they can roam and be happy until they meet their untimely doom of being in my crock pot simmering with some spices.

It was passed this week which means they will be getting bigger cages, more animals will be free range, and the prices of our groceries will skyrocket again. Do you all realize how much of our milk comes from California? It's first in the country in milk and cheese production. Not to mention the chicken farmers who will go bankrupt from having to change the thousands of cages and if they don't do it by a certain date they will be fined like crazy.

Maybe this will be the wake up call we need with groceries to realize that we didn't start relying on milk and dairy as a daily necessity until about 50 years ago and that we don't have to have eggs in everything. And maybe this will also mean that we cut back on our consumption of beef and chicken as a nation. But probably not.

If you want to take a minute... 11-06-08 09:31am CST
go read my husbands blog :) He doesn't post very often.

-----

So part of my 30 things to do before I turn 30 list that I made on my 29th birthday is to cook with 10 different mediums than what I normally cook with. I have used Tofu before, but not silken. I decided that since Wal Mart had their asparagus on sale for 1.99 a pound that I would make a tofu scramble for breakfast this morning with a little feta and goat. Thus knocking out 2 of the 10 mediums because I've never even tried goat cheese before today. It's not bad. Smelly... but most cheese is, which is why I don't normally smell it but someone told me it was a smelly cheese so I decided in my infinite wisdom to smell it and then almost gag and not try any of it. It tastes wonderful and its MUCH lower in fat than most cow cheeses.
Thankfully my husband is not home right now or he would be saying things like "OH MY WORD THAT SMELLS SO BAD!"

It tastes ok but the tofu is a custard texture and I usually like my scrambles to be pretty firm. I may try making something else with the silken later today, I have a couple cookie recipes that call for it instead of butter.

=====

So I just realized I don't think I ever talked about my 30 things to do before I turn 30 list. It's a personal list and I won't post all of them but I will talk about some of them while I'm doing them. The cooking mediums one seems ok for public knowledge :) That one and the going to the corvette museum, Kentucky museum, Lost river cave for something other than a wedding, walking the Civil war trench on WKUs campus instead of staring at it every time I walk past... those kinds of things. Piddly little things that don't mean much in the grand scheme of life but I had to fill in the five things on my list that are highly personal with a bunch of fluff.

-----

My Thursday morning lab was canceled because it is a Tuesday/Thursday lab and Tuesdays lab did not meet because of the election so we are not meeting today because Tuesday didn't meet. I still have gourmet foods tonight which I am looking forward to :)

Tonight is beef. mmmmm.... beeeeef.

Have a wonderful day, I'm going to go do something other than this :)

chariroseyActually that sounds really good. Although I've never tried goat cheese.
Your list is a great idea! I hope you accomplish all of them. Then you'll have to share what they were!
wolftrackI don't mind telling you, but I can't reply with a private message. So, ask some other time or something and I will tell you in private.
megHey, a 30 things before 30 is a great idea...I've only got a month and a half, though. Hm. Maybe I'll try 31 things by 31 years old.

Any more pork ideas? I'm getting tired of plain cooked pork. I topped with cheese in a creamy sauce last night. Ok, but typical Kraft style.
siobhanGoat cheese is one of our favorites. One way i like to eat it is in spinach salad with dried cranberries and almonds or walnuts. I usually top that with raspberry vinagrette. My absolute favorite salad.
whipsmileI had to reasses my before 30 list and make it my before 35 list.
i will be 30 in April.
silly_nickelWait... where is there a Civil War trench on campus? I want to see it...
curlieThat sweet potato/apricot thing sounds really good. My family never ate sweet potatoes at Thanksgiving, so I didn't even try them until I met Ethan (his parents always have them). I may make some since Nate likes them too. :)
alissasmommyI love goat cheese. Especially Chevre (sp?)it is really good spread over the top of a pan seared steak and they broiled until lightly browned on top. Mmmmm I am hungry now!
alissasmommyMaybe with a balsamic pan sauce.....
DessertDivaThey used eggs and milk 50 years ago - just more people had farms and lived off the land.
kmbrewcrewthe farmers will also not be able to raise the same amount of stock, so supply will go down. that too will cause the prices to go up...
kmbrewcrewjust some more unintended consequences to liberalism
curlieI think the difference is that eggs and dairy are both used in a ton of processed foods. Whereas 50 years ago (I'll add a few years to that and say 60 years ago, since 50 years ago processed foods were in the beginning of their heyday) people ate eggs and dairy in their whole forms, today we not only eat them that way but also in tons of processed foods.

I think we need to recognize that cheap food is not always good. I'd rather pay a little more for REAL food than pay less for processed plastic garbage my body doesn't know how to process only to find melamine in my 2% when dairy farmers find themselves scrambling for ways to stretch the dairy supply...

Suzy, have you read In Defense of Food? I read it and am now reading The Omnivore's Dilemma. Do you cover that kind of thing in your classes?
stylinmamaI was really torn on this subject, even after watching that Oprah show. I don't want to have to pay tons of money for groceries, but some of the conditions of the animals was horrendous.

I think they have until like 2012 to fully cooperate with this new law. So we have until then to save up for groceries. :)
snugglebugegg whites are almost my only protein.
sar_bearI don't remember the last time I had an egg. I don't get them much here at school.
be_with_me_lordIn CA, PETA has been chipping away at farmers for years and this will probably end the lives of many farmers. When we lived there, dairy farmers were under attack because as they built housing closer to the farms, the homeowners sued and won because of flies and smell that they didn't want to put up with. THose dairy farms are gone now replaced by houses. Why is this fair? Who was there first? I just don't like this type of legislation.
marlaThis is making me laugh :)

"Tonight is beef. mmmmm.... beeeeef."
"And maybe this will also mean that we cut back on our consumption of beef and chicken as a nation."
beckyrooI think we will be okay...my cousins and aunts have chickens that lay eggs pretty consistently. Now if I can just talk my parents into getting a dairy cow...we would be in business. :-)
fireboltChickens are dumb, retarded animals. If you've spent anytime around them...you realize they don't need bigger cages and I DEFINITELY am not eating free range chickens.

That's my view on them. LOL.
chariroseyHmmm, the prices probably won't go up in fast food or restaurants though. They'll just find something else to mix in it to make it cheaper to sell the food (like mcdonalds hamburgers).
scbrewerTruthfully there are no fillers in McDonalds hamburgers. There are fillers in the McRib nastiness thats out right now though. Ew... blah...

They did use eggs 50 years ago but I doubt they were as readily available as they are now. Milk and egg products are in everything, they have become fillers in most things added thickeners, etc.
whipsmileI am NOT an Oprah fan. And she is still HUGE here.
But yes, that is very sad. :-(
kiss_the_raindo you realize how much of my milk comes from california? ;)
alinaomi7smoothies are good with silken tofu! And I LOVEEE Goat cheese. What are you going to school for?

ok. Done. 11-05-08 05:21pm CST
Life is moving on. Whether we like the leader elect or not, we woke up this morning, life went on. And it will, as long as the Lord allows.

I do find it interesting that those who bash Bush are telling us we have to respect Obama. Shouldn't it be both?

That was my final political statement.

-----

I love the smell of ginger, garlic, and bok choy sauteing in a pan.

What is a smell you love?

jbc2789Well, like mother like daughter, I have loved the smell of rubber for as long as I can remember, as in new tires and the way flip flops smelled back in the 50's and 60's. You knew it was summer when you walked into the 5 and 10 cent store and it smelled like new flip flops! I still love to stop a take a deep breath when we walk in to Sam's Club-their tire store is right at the front door.

darleen21my husband when he gets all spruced up for a date and the smell of my kitchen when I'm cooking.
bdocOh, I saw it coming. I predicted his election before he was even nominated, but reality is like a ton of bricks! And, yes, our nation's decline has been taking place for years, but it appears to be hastening now. Having confidence in God's kingdom is my steadfast hope, but it does not eliminate the grief I feel for my country on earth. Jesus wept for Jerusalem.

Varying thoughts I thought were interesting.

Passages I've been reading today; 11-05-08 08:25am CST
Ecc 7:8-11
"The end of a thing is better than its beginning;
The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry,
For anger rests in the bosom of fools.
Do not say,

“ Why were the former days better than these?”
For you do not inquire wisely concerning this.
Wisdom is good with an inheritance,
And profitable to those who see the sun."

Romans 13
" Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.
2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.
3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same.
4 For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.
5 Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake.
6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing.
7 Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.

8 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.
9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

11 And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.
12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.
13 Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy.
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts."

1 Corinthians 13

" 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.
2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.
4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;
5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;
6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;
7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part.
10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.
13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love."

James 1:2-8
"2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,
3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.
4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.
7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;
8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways."

James 1:22-27
"22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;
24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.
27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world."

And Proverbs 3. It's a really long chapter to post on here. But please read it as well :) It helps :)

God is still in control.
Jesus is still the savior of us ALL.
And this world, this country, is NOT my home.

p.s. I turned off comments on previous "controversial" public blogs
teelduoI found myself reading through Ephesians, Phillipians and some of Romans this morning.
