Google to add 10 million Life images 11-19-08 07:55am CST
From an article in Computerworld:

Google today said that it plans to archive as many as 10 million photos and digitized images from the Life magazine archives. Some of the images date back to the 1750s, and many have never been published.

Google today announced that it will add the images from Life photographers to its Google Image Search pages. Only a small percentage of the images -- including newly digitized images from photos and etchings -- have even been published, Google said in a blog post. The rest have been "sitting in dusty archives in the form of negatives, slides, glass plates, etchings, and prints," Google said.

Read the rest of the article here.

adamandjessesdadLooks like a good way to occupy a lot of time!
mikejohnsontxIs this your picture of the week?
trxno, it was Margaret Bourke-White's photo of the Fort Peck Dam, and was the cover image on the first issue of Life magazine - an absolutely iconic image for that reason.
adampualthat sounds like a fun job for those engineers...at least they get to look at cool photos all day!
tgatzajrThat would really be interesting! I have got a lot of use out of their digitized books.

mother_henI always knew I can hear better when I can see the lips moving, but didn't know it had a name!

kendraluluHow was your trip to CO?
marlalol I love that the panorama you left on Chris' blog had John Denver for background music... :)
joeHey, sorry I'm missing you guys this morning. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. I'm holed up with a bit of a migraine. Will be there either tonight or Wed.

What's wrong with this picture? 11-03-08 10:10pm CST
This is a chart of the changes in the national debt under the various administrations since WW2. All the numbers are stated as percentages of GDP, which essentially normalizes the data to the present value of money and the strength of the economy, and makes year vs year comparisons meaningful. I get a bit irritated when people say things like "the debt is higher than it ever has been" - that statement, taken baldly, is essentially meaningless. As the country grows, and as the size of the economy grows, the debt can grow without impacting the economy.

A disturbing and frustrating pattern appears when you highlight the Republican administrations in the last 35 years.

tgatzajrWorse yet, abortion was legalized in 1973 and since then 48,589,993 babies have been killed during 24 years of Republican presidents. The Democrates aren't much better since they openly endorse the slaughter.
sharonI'm about ready to say "I didn't leave the Republican Party, the Republican Party left me."
adampualthat is actually pretty accurate.
adamandjessesdadYet Christians are sure that the Republican party best represents them.
madtomkiddTodd put up a graph of the last few presidents here.

I don't for a minute claim to be totally behind Bush - in fact, i'm pretty disgusted with this administration.

My question in this is how much of those budgets were military spending? I'm not sure where you guys get your data, but I'd be interested to see if a big chunk of what we've dealt with hasn't been related to non-military spending as fallout from 9/11 (granted, that was a long time ago, but some of the initial decisions have long term impacts - à la Social Security).
trxSome of the questions on Todd's page about post-WW2 etc. are answered in the first of this chart. The 1950s boom (a denominator in the debt/GDP numbers) certainly helped shrink the size of the increases then.

Certainly some of Clinton's reductions in his second term were due to shrinking the military, so that's one data point. I can't speak to your question otherwise.

This data was redacted from a wikipedia article, but I validated the base data against an official website. More than one commentator has suggested that debt loads in the 40%-50% have been typical over the history of the republic.
scrappyhappymamaThat's really appalling. Does this mean that Republicans talk the spending less and cutting taxes talk, but in actuality spend what they'd like and make up the difference by mortgaging our future?
kon_tikidon't know you...came from his blog. anyway, i would suggest that one has to look at Congress and particularly the impact of massive social programs. for example, Reagan's tax cuts produced huge economic growth but the Congressoinal spending also went through the roof. The truth is until we change Social Security and Medicare there is little that we can do in changing these numbers. To his credit, Bush did try to change SS but the DEMs stonewalled him.
beep_girlHi Troxel. It's Lynn! :)
slave_of_jesus_jdbThats a good picture of you two.

Umm... 10-25-08 12:06pm CST
mladymanYa mean, like, a LIBRARY????
tgatzajrNow that's a great thought! A place where we can rent books and take them back for someone else to read them.
Why hasn't someone thought of that before?

And these people are allowed to vote?
sharonOh brother.
marlaLOL Failblog! ;)

capt_cornLOL!!! I've actually seen that before. It's great. :)
adampual[ditto|adamandjessesdad.
sperky*L* that's funny.
marlaA pirate walks into a bar with a paper towel on his head.
The bartender says "Hey, what's with the paper towel?"
The pirate says "ARGG, there's a Bounty on me head".
madtomkidd"Handy" does sound quite appropriate. I'm just stuck in a corporate culture where any name/acronym seems to intentionally convey something other than what is actually being named.

And, there are some VERY funny things on the failblog.
tgatzajrI'm not sure how write in votes are counted. I just hope they are not tossed out. It will be interesting to see how much of the population chose a write in candidate this election year.
I think it interesting that you chose to vote CP. I did to!
kt80The CP candidates didn't make it to the ballot in TX? They did here, but they don't list the party affiliation for 3rd parties, so you have to know who's who.
joeThanks for the invite! I didn't realize Houston was still there! :) I have to come back and pick up my truck one of these days anyways it's at George Bush last I checked. :)
